Spirit Airlines offers two free checked bags and a free carry-on to active-duty military passengers, in addition to the already free personal item. However, airlines require that U.S. Military members come early enough to have their bags checked at the counter and provide their U.S. Military ID. Frontier welcomes U.S. military travelers onboard and offers the following baggage waivers and one of the best cheap military travel flight, when they provide a Common Access Card (CAC) with a uniformed forces affiliation at check-in:

  • One free personal item.
  • One free carry-on bag.
  • Two free checked bags.

These baggage waivers only apply to active military personnel and do not include family members or traveling companions. All baggage accepted from US military passengers must adhere to baggage acceptance standards, including size and weight constraints. The first two complimentary checked bags are exempt from overweight and excessive baggage fees.

Take note ACTIVE duty members of the armed services, reserves, and national guard are considered U.S. military travelers.

Members who are from the Canadian and United States military are allowed for an increased luggage allowance when flying with Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, or Air Canada Express. There will be additional luggage limits for force members from the United States and Canada when they fly on Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, or Air Canada Express.

Active and retired military personnel from the US and Canada are permitted to check up to three pieces of luggage up to 32 kg (70 lbs.).  Military personnel might use the funds for private or professional travel.  

Self-service check-in does not automatically apply the additional luggage allowance, as eligibility requires presenting a valid military ID to a Customer Sales and Service Agent at the airport.

Eligible military members can check-in using self-service options (kiosk, web, mobile). To receive the enhanced baggage allowance, please indicate that you are traveling without checked bags when prompted at check-in (online, mobile, or airport kiosk).

 When presenting military identity, Air Canada agents will tag and check your bags for free.

Members who are eligible for Priority Check-in will receive an extra allowance upon presenting a valid military identification card. 

Identification includes the DND ID card for National Defense (NDI 20).

Requirements for eligibility include a Record of Service Card (NDI 75), a Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) Benefit Card, a Discharge Certificate from any branch of the Canadian Military, a Statement of Service, a Certificate of Service (CF 54 or CF 75), and a valid DND Temporary ID card (NDI 10).

  • A Canadian Forces or former member’s CFOne card (supported by a photo ID)
  • Photo ID and membership card from the National Association of Federal Retirees mentioning Canadian Armed Forces Veteran.
